About the Guest Artists

Justin Burgess, baritone, is a recipient of the 2016 Bel Canto Institute Performance Award. He is an undergraduate at the University of Michigan majoring in vocal performance. Though still an undergraduate junior, he has already appeared in leading roles in several productions with the university's historical Gilbert and Sullivan Society, has been an active member of the Men's Glee Club, and performed in the premiere of the new opera, L'alba separa dalla luce l'ombra, composed by a fellow student. Before attending college Mr. Burgess was active in his school choir and theater departments, attended summer performance programs, and participated in community productions.

 


Karen Frankenstein, soprano, is this year’s recipient of the Bel Canto Institute Honorary Orchestral Performance Award as well as the winner of the Premier Grand Prix Opéra in the Concours International de Chant de Paris. She was a prize winner in the Concours International d’Opéra de Marseille and a national finalist in American Artists’ competition of the Chicago Lyric Opera. Frankenstein has enjoyed critical acclaim in Germany, France and the United States, performing leading roles at the Berlin Philharmonie, the Hannover Staatspoper, the Lyrique en Mer, New York Chamber Opera, El Paso Opera, Central City Opera and Tulsa Opera. Her many leading roles include Lucia di Lammermoor, Violetta in La Traviata, Gilda in Rigoletto, both Mimi and Musetta in La Bohème, Marguerite in Faust and the Heroines in the Les Contes d'Hoffman, among others.
